"I wanted to create a firm that would be unpretentious, informed, personal, trustworthy and wise. It must be totally committed to the interests of the clients it serves, be wedded to the principle of service and offer excellent value for money." John Astbury
April 15th 2014 was the 25th anniversary of John qualifying as a solicitor, so he has considerable experience of all sorts of cases. He trained in London and worked in London and Brighton at DMH Solicitors before setting up his own practice in Lewes (East Sussex) in November 2001. This professional practice is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and our SRA ID is 350911.

On the family side of the business, wills, powers of attorney, property and probate matters are a particular interest. John supports Solicitors for the Elderly, an independent national organisation of lawyers, who provide specialist legal advice for older and vulnerable people, their families and carers. To help clients, Astburys aims to ensure that all communications are free from jargon and in plain English. The practice can offer a ground-floor room for those clients who want to visit our offices but are in wheelchairs and if mobility is a major problem John will happily visit a local client at home at no extra cost.
Based in the centre of Lewes, Astburys is ideally placed to deal with all aspects of local businesses, such as dispute resolution, landlord and tenant issues, employment, conveyancing and drawing up contracts or terms and conditions. The practice is not limited to these alone, however - John has relished the opportunity to tackle such diverse matters as livestock ownership and film rights.
Now with 25+ years’ experience, John trained originally in the West End of London, qualifying in 1989 when he specialized in commercial and civil litigation and debt recovery. He then worked for four years with the Brighton/Crawly based DMH solicitors, where he attained associate status in 2000.
Having moved to Lewes and set up Astburys Solicitors, John wanted the practice to be part of the community around it, which meant that it became a general practice for both private and business clients. Based for some time at the riverside at Falcons Wharf, Astburys moved in August 2014 to the present offices in Lewes House, a convenient and central location for seeing clients. A popular and friendly figure, John lives as well as works in Lewes (as do all his staff) and so is ideally placed to understand local issues and concerns.
Each year the practice dedicates a great deal of time and effort to raising money for charity. Astburys Solicitors supports Will Aid, which raises money for Actionaid, the British Red Cross, Age UK, the NSPCC and Save the Children amongst others. In lieu of John’s fees, clients make a donation when he draws up their wills and to date Astburys has raised over £16,500, something to be justifiably proud of.
Astburys Solicitors primary focus is that of serving the community to the best of its ability and aims to continue to do so for many years to come.
